“Migration and Mobility” axis (aMiMo) of the French Institute for Anatolian Studies is glad to announce the first talk in the Current Issues on Migration seminar series, held in collaboration with the Migration Studies Association (GAR).

Current Issues on Migration seminar series aims to bring together social scientists and members of the civil society to present and discuss each month an issue related to international migration and mobilities in Turkey. This year we will focus on crucial aspects of refugees circulation and installation in Turkey, starting with Education (from October to December), and Work (from January to March).

Refugee settlement in Jordan and Lebanon Camp dwellers and self-settled refugees

The third talk of the Current Issues on Migration series will be presented by Dr. Kamel Dorai. Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011, over 5 million refugees settled in neighbouring countries. While Jordan and Turkey have decided to open refugee camps, Lebanon still refuses this option. This presentation will analyse the settlement strategies developed by refugees to adapt in contexts of high constraints, due to the precarious legal status of these refugees and their socio-economic vulnerability in Jordan and Lebanon.

Kamel Doraï’s work focuses on asylum and refugees in the Middle East and transnational practices within the Palestinian diaspora. He is currently conducting research on refugees from Syria and the urbanization process of the refugee camps.

La troisième séance du cycle de séminaires Enjeux Actuels des Migrations sera présentée par Kamel Doraï. Depuis le déclenchement du conflit syrien en 2011, plus de 5 millions de réfugiés se sont installés dans les pays voisins. Alors que la Jordanie et la Turquie ont décidé d’ouvrir des camps de réfugiés, le Liban refuse toujours cette option. Cette séance portera sur les stratégies d’installation mises en œuvre par les réfugiés dans des contextes de fortes contraintes liées à la précarité de leur statut juridique de réfugiés et à leur vulnérabilité socio-économique en Jordanie et au Liban.

Le travail de Kamel Doraï porte sur l’asile et les réfugiés au Moyen-Orient et les pratiques transnationales de la diaspora Palestinienne. Il mène actuellement des recherches sur les réfugiés de Syrie et le processus d’urbanisation des camps de réfugiés.
