“Migration and Mobility” axis (aMiMo) of the French Institute for Anatolian Studies is glad to announce the first talk in the Current Issues on Migration seminar series, held in collaboration with the Migration Studies Association (GAR).

Current Issues on Migration seminar series aims to bring together social scientists and members of the civil society to present and discuss each month an issue related to international migration and mobilities in Turkey. This year we will focus on crucial aspects of refugees circulation and installation in Turkey, starting with Education (from October to December), and Work (from January to March).

Syrians’ integration into the labor markets of Turkey and other neighboring countries

The access of Syrians to the labor markets in the neighboring countries of Syria remains a policy-sensitive issue seven years into an ongoing civil war. In this presentation, we go briefly through the region to showcase the initiatives and policy updates related to Syrians’ access to the national labor markets. Then, we cover the state of play in Turkey in terms of legislation, Syrians in the labor market, and finally, we cover the case of Syrian entrepreneurs in the subjects of capital, sector breakdown, location, and what it means for the economy of Turkey.

OMAR KADKOY is a Research Associate at the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey’s (TEPAV) Area Studies Program, since August 2014. At TEPAV, his work focuses on migration especially the socio-economic integration of the forcibly displaced population in the areas of employment, entrepreneurship, education, and housing.
